Mathematics at St. Peter's Primary Academy

At St. Peter's Primary Academy, we believe that every child can be successful in mathematics. Our aim is to develop confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians who are able to reason, problem solve and apply their learning to real-life situations.

We follow the White Rose Maths curriculum, providing a carefully sequenced journey that enables children to build on prior knowledge and develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Through the use of the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach, children explore mathematics using practical resources, visual representations and abstract methods to ensure learning is meaningful and secure.

A strong emphasis is placed on fluency, retrieval and recall. Daily opportunities to revisit previous learning help children strengthen long-term memory and develop confidence with key mathematical skills. We are particularly passionate about ensuring children develop secure recall of multiplication.

Consistency is at the heart of our mathematics curriculum. Through an agreed calculation policy, children are exposed to the same representations, models and strategies as they move through the school, enabling them to make connections, deepen understanding and develop confidence in their mathematical thinking.

At St. Peter's, mathematics is about far more than finding the correct answer. We encourage children to explain their thinking, justify their reasoning, take risks and embrace challenges. By fostering a positive attitude towards mathematics, we aim to equip every child with the skills, confidence and curiosity needed to succeed both in school and beyond.
