Writing at St. Peter’s
At St. Peter's Primary Academy, we believe that every child has a story to tell and a voice that deserves to be heard. Our writing curriculum is designed to inspire children to become confident, creative and purposeful writers who can communicate effectively for a wide range of audiences and purposes.
Through a carefully sequenced journey from Nursery to Year 6, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to write with increasing fluency, accuracy and independence. Our curriculum has been thoughtfully designed to ensure that learning builds progressively over time, enabling pupils to revisit, practise and master essential writing skills before applying them in increasingly sophisticated ways. Drawing on a wide range of genres, children learn to write to inform, entertain and persuade, developing a secure understanding of how authors adapt their writing to achieve different purposes.
At the heart of our approach are high-quality texts, rich experiences and meaningful contexts that capture children's imaginations and provide an authentic purpose for writing. Each writing unit is built around carefully selected literature, significant authors, poetry, real-life experiences and engaging stimuli, ensuring that pupils are immersed in ambitious vocabulary, diverse ideas and exemplary models of writing. From traditional tales and biographies to persuasive speeches, newspaper reports and fantasy narratives, children encounter a rich breadth of genres throughout their time at St. Peter's.
Our curriculum follows a spiral approach, allowing pupils to revisit text types and writing skills in greater depth as they move through the school. This ensures that key knowledge is embedded in long-term memory and that children are able to make connections between previous learning and new experiences. Alongside composition, pupils develop their understanding of grammar, vocabulary and authorial choices through carefully planned progression that supports them in becoming increasingly skilled and reflective writers.
We want our children to leave St. Peter's not only with the ability to write accurately and effectively, but with a genuine love of writing. By nurturing imagination, creativity and a passion for language, we empower every child to become a writer who can inform, entertain, persuade and inspire others.
